Moral obligation to obey authority V.S. prudence:

There are two kinds of rationale for showing deference to or obeying those vested with authority. One rationale accepts the idea of authority, while the other does not.

(1) One rationale for obedience is that one should defer to those in authority because, in the absence of exceptional circumstances, legitimate authority ought to be obeyed simply because it is authority. In this case, such persons believe that it is morally wrong in ordinary circumstances to refuse such obedience.

(2) The second rationale for obedience to authority is fear of painful consequences (punishment). If this is the sole rationale for obedience, those who obey do not respect authority, but act simply to avoid painful consequences. Obedience is merely a matter of prudence.
