宋慈出身在一个朝廷官吏家庭，父名巩，曾做过广州节度推官。他一生 20 余年的官宦生涯中，先后担任 4 次高级刑法官。宋慈在处理狱讼中，特别重视现场勘验。他对当时传世的尸伤检验著作加以综合、核定和提炼，并结合自己丰富的实践经验，完成了《洗冤集录》这部系统的法医学著作。
之后曾有以《洗冤集录》中的案例为基础而生的电视影集，而在 CSI: Las Vegas 剧中也曾提到宋慈是法医学的鼻祖。（数据源：维基百科）
