I teach in a secondary state school in Edinburg. I teach modern studies which is a subject only taught in Scotland. It's a combination of politics, sociology and international relations.

Most of the 16-year-olds are, they vote no, because they don't know enough about the issues yet.

They know what democracy is supposed to be. This is the concept of democracy, This is how it works in practice. What democracy is like. You get them questioning it and working out what is democracy and what isn't.

There are good reason for voting no. I mean, I don't have to teach all sides of the argument and I did worry that would it be too obviously that I was voting yes?

My colleague is voting yes, so we designed the curriculum together. We found that it was very useful because obviously she has her own opinion and I have mine, so it meant that we could actually present both sides of the case.

As for what 16-year-olds are actually like, they are just like any other bunch of people. Some of them are brilliant and some of them are nasty.

Scottish youngsters think they hate politics, but then, they would come up with extremely politic reasons to hate politics, so it's always very interesting.

But what worries me a bit about young people is that they don't actually think anything can ever change. But sometimes it's really heartbreaking.

We polled them all at the beginning and most of them were absolutely no. By the end of the course, when we polled them again, 1/3 of them voted yes, 1/3 of them voted no, and the rest couldn't decide it. So it's exactly the same results as adults. The more engaged you are with politics and political issues, the more likely you are to vote yes.
