First though, a French language film Elle about the boss of a computer game company played by Isabelle Huppert. She's in charge of a team of mostly young men engaged in making lurid fantasy adventures that sometimes depict violence against women. Then she herself experiences a violent intrusion at her own home. Her reaction to the attack is unexpected because this isn't a conventional revenge movie.

What Huppert's character does may be shocking to many, absurd to others, terrifying to some, but it's carried out with great aplomb. Now, at one time, Elle, which is adapted from a French novel, was going to be an American movie with a Hollywood star, but as director Paul Verhoeven explained, that's the Paul Verhoeven of Total Recall as well as Basic Instinct. Isabelle Huppert had in fact been the original choice to play the lead.

Before I came to this movie, Saïd Ben Saïd, the producer, sent the book to me. Isabelle Huppert had already approached the writer of the book and the producer that she wanted to do the movie, but when I came to the movie, that was probably weeks later, we decided that it would be more advantageous to make it to an American movie because, of course, English being commercially a much better language than French, German or Dutch. So, after all that's done and the script being ready, then we found out that certainly not any American actress wants to do this part.
