The smell of the durian fruit may have been likened to raw sewage by disapproving western travellers, but in parts of south-east Asia the durian is a much-loved king of the fruits. Big, heavy, spiky and stinky, the humble durian was the centre of attention at Sydney's Malaysia festival where fans of the sweet and creamy Durio zibethinus gathered to see who could wolf down the most of it in a tense durian-eating contest
