毕加索和布拉克由于受到非洲雕刻和塞尚作品的影响，发展出立体派。毕加索画的『阿维农的少女』是立体派开始的第一件作品，呈现物体由不同视点所观察的结果。他们根据塞尚的理论，把东西分割成很多面，然后再把各个不同角度的面重新加以组合在同一张画面上。有时最后的样子，就好像东西被剁碎再放回同一平面一样。
