The Common Good and the individual good:

The common good is often contrasted with the particular interests of individuals or groups, since the common good and particular interests are often capable of conflicting. In certain circumstances, individuals may profit or gain in some other way from transactions that harm the common good, as when public officials take bribes, or when those who are or might be infected by a deadly infectious disease refuse to be quarantined.

Rejection of certain conceptions of the Common Good:

Democracy rejects any idea of the common good that transcends its members, considering them no more than means to an end, as instruments. Thus democracy rejects the idea of a transcendent public glory, the glory of a state or nation, as a common good for which any number of citizens may be sacrificed in military struggles. For democracy, each individual is an end in him- or herself. The common good is the sum or inclusion of all individual goods. The common good of security, for example, includes the security of all individuals.
