Orsola De Marco: You know, I think you do see kids who are [-----1-----] the sciences and these are the ‘Why?’ kids. ‘Why’s that?,’ and you say, ‘Because.’ And of course, there’s another ‘Why?’

That’s Orsola De Marco, who was herself a “Why?” kid. Today, she’s an astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. She talked with Earth & Sky about her childhood.

Orsola De Marco: Another, you know, thing that happened to me at a very early age is of course you get asked what you wanted to be when you grow up. Very, very early, I said to my parents that I wanted to be an academic, and my mother almost [-----2-----].

There were other clues about her future as a scientist — De Marco would test the laws of physics, dropping [-----3-----] out of her windows to see if parachutes she had constructed, made of plastic bags, would work.

Orsola De Marco: I myself [-----4-----] of a window once with an umbrella, after seeing Mary Poppins. That didn’t work either — the umbrella flips. I can tell you the result of the experiment.

Now she’s a full-fledged astrophysicist, but there’s a still a lot of imagination in the way she views her work. She described telescopes, for example, which give us information about light billions of years old:

Orsola De Marco: [-----5-----].

You are listing to Orsola De Marco. I am Joel Block from E&S, a clear voice for science. We are at E&S. org.
