China is quite near to Australia. __3__. Today I'm going to talk to Mario whose family came from Italy and to Helena from Greece. Mario, when did the first Italians arrive in Australia?

Mario: The first Italians went there, like the Chinese, in the gold-rushes, hoping to find gold and become rich. But many also went there for political reasons. __4__.

Interviewer: I believe there are a lot of Italians in the sugar industry.

Mario: Yes, that's right. __5__. They worked very hard and many saved enough money to buy their own land. In this way they came to dominate the sugar industry on many parts of the Queensland coast.

Mario: No. A lot of them are in the fishing industry. __6__. At the end of the nineteenth century some of these went to western Australia to make a new life for themselves. Again, many of them, including my grandfather, were successful.
