作为皇家科学院的成员，拉瓦锡参与了方方面面的活动。1870年，拉瓦锡对一位年轻科学家提出的理论表达了轻蔑的看法，虽然那科学家的理论的却不成立，但也导致了他不肯原谅拉瓦锡。拉瓦锡拥有当时一流的实验室，却从来没发现任何元素。不过他却为化学的发展起到了规范化和注重方法学的推动作用~~~
