英曼是美国南北战争末期一名受伤士兵，在灵魂仿佛燃尽之后，对家园强烈的渴望支撑他站立起来，踏上了艰辛漫长的归家旅程。他的情人艾达则在山影交错的乡间忍受孤独，度过了失怙独立的蜕变期，学会了如何与粗砺尖锐的生活抗挣。战争摧毁了一切，而依然兀立的冷山是他们之间唯一的联系，也是他们回忆与想望的地方——一个即使你所信仰的天堂已然破灭，却仍能为你疗伤止痛的美好国度。
